Roland and Angie’s block

Here are some photos I took of Angie and Roland’s block today–midsummer and dry, but still very beautiful!  Mainly pictures up the back, of the hill, the orchard gully and the trees. And one at the end looking from the western boundary across to our new house site!

  1. Beautiful country. Is that the Melaleuca lanceolata (Moonah)? Lovely old trees – look good for honey.
Maybe a few bee skeps here and there would be in order…..

  2. Yes, there is a big flowering event. Down here they call these trees Dry Land Ti-Tree, to distinguish them from the swamp variety, which used to be common before the drains went in and took out what used to be extensive wetlands. I’m not sure if they are the same variety as Moonah trees–I was looking at this http://www.depi.vic.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0016/204154/CoastalMoonahFieldGuide.pdf. They certainly look similar. But I’ve not heard that name down here.

Ours are old trees, probably 80 years or more, across both our blocks–Neville Bonney, the noted botanist, visited our place a couple of years ago (a connection through the SA Native Foods Association) and was excited about these trees–he said there were few stands left in the district. Really we should get them Heritage registered, which we will do sooner rather than later.
